A Brief Cessation – Short Short Story

Fred Rock fiction stories

The soldier in green discovered his enemy by accident. He had been told the paratrooper bailed out miles downstream yet there he sat on the bank, his rifle lying beside him.

Pistol outstretched, he burst from the brush and the soldier in tan froze. Then slowly, he placed both hands on his head.

The soldier in green searched his pockets, confiscating weapons and ammunition. Then he found a gold watch hanging from his enemy’s neck by a chain.

“Nice!” he said opening it. “You won’t be needing this anymore.”

Inside the lid was a photo of the man before him smiling with a pretty woman and two little children. The soldier in green stood staring for long moments.

With a sniff, he clicked it shut and returned it to the soldier in tan.

Then, he continued downstream.
